Match against tenacious Blues results in tie

29/07/2008 1:10:00 PM
The reserve grade match resulted in a tie between the Tigers and the Wauchope Blues at Central Park.

The game started well for the Tigers with a try to Daniel Buck in the corner in the first minute for a 4-0 lead.

It wasn’t for another half an hour until the scoreboard changed when Wauchope levelled the scores with a try.

In the final minute of the first half, Doug Ferguson crashed over to put Wingham ahead again.

Scott Hammond kicked the conversion for a 10-4 advantage at the break.

The Blues hit back early in the second stanza with an unconverted try to trail 10-8.

Ten minutes later, Russell Babekuhl found a hole in Wauchope’s defence and ran 80 metres to score near the posts.

Again, Scott Hammond added the extra points for a 16-8 lead.

With just over 10 minutes remaining in the contest, a Wauchope player picked the ball up and ran 50 metres to score.

The Tigers camp claim this try was the result of a Blues knock on.

The referee awarded the try and Wauchope trailed 16-12.

In the final minutes, the Blues levelled the scores 16-16.

The conversion would have won the contest for the Blues, but the kick went wide.

In the end, the teams shared the competition points.

Despite the draw, the Tigers have sealed a top two finish in reserve grade with three games remaining.
