First grade league
An injury-ridden Wingham Tigers were no match for the undefeated Group Three rugby league competition leaders, the Port City Breakers, when they clashed at the Wingham Sporting Complex on Saturday.
Wingham went into the game without arguably their four best players – Dave Corbet, Nigel Latham, Richie Donovan and Pete Smith.
Regular first graders Aaron Green, Dan Murray, Mick Murray and Brenden Summerfield were also ruled out.
The Tigers also lost Ryan McIntosh and Matt Paulson during the game through injury.
Port City led 10-0 within 10 minutes after two tries from bombs.
It wasn’t until midway through the half that the Breakers scored again, but they put on three tries back-to-back in five minutes to race ahead 26-0.
Another try just before the break gave the visitors a commanding 32-0 lead at half time.
The Tigers got on the scoreboard early in the second stanza when Joel Kleindeist broke through from a scrum win to register a try.
Luke Steel added the extra points.
But Port City retaliated with two more tries to extend their advantage to 42-6.
Midway through the second stanza, Doug Ferguson forced his way over the line.
Luke Steel’s conversion made the score 42-12.
Minutes later, Matt Halliday was unlucky in being penalised for double movement.
Again the Breakers took advantage with back-to-back tries to lead 52-12.
A 90-metre intercept try to Port City summed up the day for the tired Tigers who were on the wrong end of a 58-12 scoreline.
Reserve grade
A try awarded to Port City in the final minute made all the difference in the reserve grade top-of-the-table clash with the Tigers.
The Tigers camp alleges that the referee lost count of the tackles and that a chip kick by Port City on the seventh tackle was regained, resulting in a try under the posts, and victory to the Breakers by 30-24.
Wingham dominated the competition leaders in the first half with tries to Aaron Murray and Russell Babekuhl to lead 8-0 by the midway point.
Matt Paulson’s try, converted by Scott Murray, gave the Tigers a comfortable 14-0 advantage at the break.
Just after halftime, a try by Scott Hammond pushed the lead out to 18 points.
But then three back-to-back tries by the Breakers levelled the scores midway through the half at 18-18.
The Tigers took the lead again just eight minutes from full time when Matt Paulson barged over for his second try.
Scott Hammond added the extra points to lead 24-18.
But the competition leaders replied immediately to level the scores with five minutes remaining.
Under 18s
After perhaps their worst performance of the season the previous week, the under 18s Tigers were up against the undefeated competition leaders.
Wingham dominated early, having a try disallowed before Troy Fry scored out wide inside the first 10 minutes.
A try soon after by Brenden Hepworth increased the Tigers’ lead to 8-0, which they held on to until half time.
Early in the second half, Jared Collins was sent to the sin-bin for a high tackle.
While he was off the field, the Breakers scored to trail by 8-6.
A penalty goal to Tyrone Jowett gave Wingham a four point advantage with just 10 minutes remaining.
The young Tigers were able to hold that advantage until the final siren to be victorious by 10-6 in their best performance of the season.
