Archers open doors

17/06/2008 12:08:00 PM
What do Wingham’s Mountain View Archers and the National Rugby League have in common?

Not much, but the archery fraternity held its own State of Origin championships recently at Casino between New South Wales and Queensland and, unlike the other code, NSW came home the winners.

About 190 competitors made it a spectacular and grand weekend.

Back at home, the club’s social shoot was on again last weekend.

The weather certainly wasn’t too kind – a little damp and windy – but the conditions did not deter a good roll up, who were able to catch up on some gear maintenance at the club house in between showers.

Thursday night’s indoor introduction to archery is still proving to be popular with new potential archers and families keen to learn the art.

Sunday saw the club open its indoor hall to the public and help play host to the Big Boys Toys at Wingham Showground.

With a band of dedicated members, the hall was transformed into palm-lined shooting lanes with three-dimensional animal targets placed around the hall to show the different types of animals that players encounter at tournaments.

These included crocodiles, leopards, bears and hyenas.

Videos, CDs and demonstrations of shooting ability by some of our members also captured the interest of the many visitors.

The special lane for first timers – where players were instructed to hit balloons – was overwhelming with not much rest till the final bell.

The club hoped it did enough to inspire some to take up the challenge and join in this wonderful family sport.

Remember gender, stature or age are no barriers as all equipment can be tailored to suit the person.

For further information regarding the club, come over to the showground on Thursday about 6.30pm for the introductory session or ring Allan on 6557 1187 or John on 6553 6018.
