Wingham is set to become a centre for training the golfers of tomorrow.
Wingham Golf Club junior co-ordinator Barry Miles has big plans for the local golf course, including establishing a junior golf academy here.
Miles, an accredited golf coach through the Jack Newton Golf Foundation, runs an introduction to golf clinic every Sunday at the Wingham Golf Club.
Ever since he moved to Kimbriki from the NSW Far North Coast he saw the enormous potential of Wingham Golf Club to attract juniors from all over the region.
“It’s the perfect venue for a junior golf academy,” Miles said.
“There is a motel on site and junior players can be billeted out It’s about putting Wingham on the map.”
A number of other exciting events are in the pipeline, including social golf days for juniors and a junior pennants competition.
The Sunday beginners sessions have about 20 regular attendees. More are needed to boost the initiative.
But Miles stresses that the sessions are not just for juniors.
People of all ages can benefit from the course – including more experienced players.
The focus is on developing skill, setting handicaps, and learning the rules and etiquette of the game.
There are six levels the participants must progress through before they are allowed to become an official member of the golf club.
Miles said this system of teaching has produced some of the game’s greats including names like Adam Scott, Aaron Badley, Stuart Appleby and Robert Allenby.
Those interested in taking part can come along to the introductory sessions at the golf club of a Sunday.
The clinic covering the basics of golf is held between 9am and 10am, with a game following.
Miles has played golf for the past 62 years, including 45 years as an A-grade golfer.
He acknowledged the board of the Wingham Golf Club for its strong support of his plans.
