Wet fails to deter crowds

The week of events had a wet start, but this failed to keep footy-mad Winghamites away from the Centenary of League celebrations last week.

Crowds flocked to Central Park, Wingham, on Thursday for the Centenary of League Gala Day - the culmination of months of planning by a small but dedicated group of volunteers.

Celebrations began with some wet junior games of rugby league and a mini-Olympics contested by the Wingham Tigers.

The official part of the program, which began about 11.30am, included an historic march past of former and current players from all over the Mid North Coast, including a strong contingent of Wingham Tigers.

The much-anticipated game re-enactment followed, which saw locals assuming the role of 1907 rugby union players.

Craig Huth played Alex Burdon, the man who dislocated his shoulder on Central Park in the match, and he played the role to perfection - being carried off the field by his team mates.

The official program was completed by the unveiling of a plaque underneath The Plane to commemorate Wingham's role in the formation of rugby league in Australia.

The plaque is one of 180 that are being unveiled across the country this year at historic sites.

Doug MacDougall from the Australian Rugby League said the Wingham plaque was one of the most significant and he praised the town for the magnificent turnout.

A Men of League function at the Wingham Services Club followed Thursday night.
