The whole of the Manning Valley will join in the fight against cancer this weekend for the 2008 Relay for Life.

The event will see teams of 10 to 15 people take turns walking or running around the Wingham Sporting Complex football field for 24 hours to raise funds for cancer research, education, support services and advocacy.

The relay is for young and old and you can walk as many or as few laps as you like.

It’s not a race and you don’t need to run.

A festival-style atmosphere is created around the event with participants encouraged to pitch a tent, camp overnight and enjoy the community atmosphere.

Participants will be entertained with bands, food and fun.

Each person on the team pays a registration fee which includes a polo shirt and breakfast.

The relay is a fundraising event where team members are encouraged to raise $100 each. Fundraising can be fun and easy.

So far, 45 teams have registered online.

Organisers have a team target of 80 so get your friends, family and workmates together today and form a team.

Registration is $15.

Go to www.relay.cancercouncil.com.au and select “Manning Valley 2008”.

Be at the Wingham Sporting Complex, Coughlan Avenue, on Saturday at 10am to witness the relay’s start.

The first lap of the relay celebrates the survivors of cancer and their carers.

This group walk the first lap alone.

All survivors and carers within the community are encouraged to attend this ceremony and they do not need to be a member of a team to participate in this part of the relay.

The next ceremony is the candlelight ceremony at dusk.

Messages are written on candle bags and a candle is placed on sand in the bags.

These are placed on the inside of the walking track and lit as the sun goes down.

A silent lap is then walked by all team members as they reflect on those that have been lost to cancer.

The relay finishes on Sunday at 10am.

For more information, phone Lisa Miggins at Wingham Home Hardware on 6553 4424 or Ted Greenwood from the Cancer Council on 6651 5732.
