Peggy van Zalm, Wingsong choir and Sophie Watt performed a wonderful mix of great music to a full house last Saturday evening at the Wingham Anglican Church hall.
The audience was entranced by young Sophie’s original songs, with insightful lyrics covering subjects that ranged from dirty socks to the super powers!
Sophie was backed up by Wingham guitarist Alex Druce.
Then they were taken by Wingsong – led by Telly Bertels – on a global journey of choral songs that included African, Romanian, Macedonian, gospel, country, Renaissance, Celtic and original tunes.
The Peggy van Zalm Trio then took to the stage, graced at times by local musicians Hugh Cowley on violin, Jim Rourke on saxophone, and Jim’s friend Jonathan Hunyor from Coogee, a jazz trumpet player who was visiting that weekend with his wife Kate.
The impromptu sextet kept the hall rocking into the night, with all ages from toddlers up on the dance floor having a great time.
One of the highlights was the combination of Wingsong and the trio singing some of Peggy’s original songs in harmony together.
Both groups are looking forward to collaborating more in the future and possibly taking the show on the road to other country halls in the wider community.
The organisers would like to express their appreciation to the Wingham community for supporting this evening of live local music.
