Constable Pat moves on

29/07/2008 1:04:00 PM
Wingham policeman Senior Constable Pat Bourgault is leaving town to take up a position at Manly.

Snr Const Bourgault has lived and worked in Wingham for the past two years.

A Canadian native, he visited Down Under and fell in love with the country.

He was particularly attracted by the abundance of water and the casual attitude of the people.

“I still feel like I’m on holidays,” Snr Const Bourgault said.

He joined the New South Wales Police Force in 1997 and was stationed at Redfern and Jindabyne before settling at Wingham.

“The area has the mountains, the bush and the ocean – a good mix.”

Wingham is similar in size to Jindabyne, but Snr Const Bourgault found Wingham to be a much busier place to work.

“It’s a different kind of policing – more community based.

“The majority of offences are not serious, it is usually alcohol related anti-social behaviour – and that requires a form of babysitting.”

Being a two-officer station, Snr Const Bourgault was forced to work closely with partner Snr Const Dave Abbott.

Thankfully, the two developed a strong working relationship and friendship.

“You could want to kill each other at a two-man station, so it’s good when you can get along.”

Snr Const Abbott said Snr Const Bourgault fitted in well from the start.

“What stands out is the sense of humour that he brought to the place.

“He’s been an asset to the station and he’s got on well with other officers and the community.”

Snr Const Bourgault believes it is the ongoing issues with children that are the biggest problems in Wingham.

Out of control parties and underage drinking are some of the most common things he has had to deal with.

“Petty things like bending street signs, being noisy, smashing stuff . . .

“I see the breakdown of family responsibility because mum and dad are too busy to know what their kids are up to.”

Snr Const Bourgault is modest about the difference he has made at Wingham.

“I’ve done my bit, seen kids come around.

“The best community relationship I’ve had is with Elands.

“Those living an alternative lifestyle don’t always mesh with police.

“But I’ve been well received by the majority of the people for taking the time and making an effort to build a presence up there.”

Snr Const Bourgault thanked the people of Wingham.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time here; it has a good community feel.

“Keep fostering that.”

Snr Const Bourgault finishes up on August 3.
