Australian Olympian to open school games day

20/08/2008 5:00:00 AM
Former Olympian and Australian hockey captain Robyn Leggatt (nee Fernley) will be special guest at an Olympic-sized celebration in Wingham this week.

Primary schools in the Upper Manning will combine at the Wingham Sporting Complex this Friday for their own Olympics day.

As many as 900 students will be involved and the day will complement their work in the classroom, where they have been following the Beijing Olympic Games and learning about other countries.

Leggatt, a member for the Greater Taree Sporting Hall of Fame who now resides at Newcastle, will speak of her experiences and perform the opening of the games.

This mini opening ceremony will include the lighting of the flame while each class marches behind a flag of the country they will represent for the day.

They will also sing We Are The World to reflect the international spirit of the Olympic Games.

The ceremony will be followed by a tabloid field day, which will see students in groups rotate through a series of physical activities where the emphasis will be on personal achievement rather than competition between participants.

The ceremony gets underway from about 9.30am.
